Piko: The title of this exhibition is named “Storm of Perception”
Body, color, air, object, line, voice ⋯ it is a space of perception that resides in the human self and around him. All of the events is consciously and unconsciously. If it presents pleasant then it will be clam and peaceful; if it presents displeasing then it will disturb the mind. In our daily lives, there are many perceptions which accumulate the thoughts and feeling of human beings. Therefore, each sense forms its own layer of perception and provides a disturbance, just like a vibration in souls made by a storm.
Piko: I capture memories, feelings and my imagination as my visual diary. My work is an allegory and metaphor of what goes around my life. For me, both of them are alike practices. If I yearn to capture abstract things, I think painting is the best way for me.
I like to experiment with materials, in my previous works I used special media such as bitumen and volcanic ashes. And recently I also use aerosil to complete my painting. I have painted with these media since 2013, because I try to create an unexpected and mysterious atmosphere in my works, I keep learning to control the media while using them. A sense of mystery can be seen by using bitumen, when I use it in my painting, it creates wave, space and unexpected effect on the surface.
We all have an animal character within us. And the image of birds keeps getting back to my memories when I draw these creatures, but this meaning is always involved with reality, the bird is a metaphor, it goes anywhere, like an angel, like what I dream in my art.
Piko: My painting is based on my personal feeling and sensation, because I observe the people and objects around me everyday, there are so many perceptions you can read from them, and all the symbols of the conflict and cultures can be found as well. It was from what I was obsessed with and what disturbed me, such as my living experiences: all the people, objects, colors, sounds, surroundings, doodles in spaces and landscapes I sense everyday. I see many issues while experiencing them, like human transformation is always changing and distorting. Sometimes I go somewhere with phantasy and try to solve the mental issues, or at least obscure it.
First: Landscape in Red
Last: Disturb Blue
The way I make paintings is intuitive, so when and where I start and stop are both unpredictable, depending on what I feel and enjoy that time.
Piko: During my residency in Luzhunan in Miaoli, Taiwan, I met numerous good new friends, such as friendly aunts who were working at Luzhunan Cultural House, Lois Chen, Peter Du ⋯ there are much more people than I could mention here. This experience gave me a new opportunity to recognize life around. The neighborhood locates close to the factory with pollution, and I visited there and saw some old red brick houses in that traditional village. Although the red brick house is old but it is retained quiet well.
In the learning activities of making ceramics, I captured a new symbol. In the process I drew this symbol in my works. Until now, I still use this symbol in my works often. This symbol looks like a pig-nose and they were attached to the red brick wall. I represent this as alive, the soul-sustaining breath. It means the sign that keeps the red brick house. You can see this symbol in my new collection of works in the solo exhibition “Storm of Perception” in Nunu Fine Art.
