“The Masters of Gutai in this era”

AKI Gallery is going to present a series of classic artworks of Sadamasa Motonaga and Takesada Matsutani after the big show last year GUTAI- Our spirit is FREE. With its significant historical and academic status, the wave of Gutai in art market has set off. This time we also invite Etsuko Nakatsuji to attend this grant exhibition. Being an artist and the wife of Sadamasa Motonaga, Nakatsuji will lead us to understand the influence of Gutai Group to the art world and the behind-door stories with other Gutai masters.

“When materials remain intact and reveal their own characteristics, they begin to tell stories, even yell out.’ – Yoshihara Jiro, the founder of the Gutai Art Association”

One of the most important contemporary Japanese artists, Takesada Matsutani, whose artworks thoroughly realize the spirit of “the characteristics of matter.” Even though the brilliant years of Gutai were over, its spirit continued to influence Matsutani. Involving the technique by blowing air into a puddle of vinyl adhesive, Matsutani makes bulges, bubbles, and drips on canvas with graphite penciled strokes.

Being a representative artist from the first generation of Gutai Art Association, Sadamasa Motonaga inherits the spirit of creating what has never been done before. He imagines a world full of adorable figures, colorful and varied forms, delivering the feeling of liveliness. The style of his lattest works was changed into a warm and humorous form. Admiring his works is just like listening to lovely odd songs. His specific sense of humor is well-known among people of all ages.

Etsuko Nakatsuji has been creating human figures for more than 50 years. These carefully honed works experimenting with the human form incorporate both humorous and pop elements, leaving viewers a strong sense of the human presence. After Nakatsuji’s husband, Sadamasa Motonaga’s death, she realized the human body is just a temporary appearance, and it might disappear at one moment. For this reason, she didn’t add too many elements of human beings into her works. On the contrary, her works are like containers filled with various spirit and emotions. Viewers could fit their own feelings and thoughts in her paintings.

Gutai has a strong impact on the later generations. The spirit of “Do what no one has done before!” and “Never imitate others!” are totally deep in each artist’s mind and soul. It encourages the rest of movement to redefine and expand what art could be.

Duration of the exhibition is from 13th October to 11th November . On the opening day(27th October), AKI will deliver a lecture and invite you to the big show about history and originality and to experience this unforgettable art movement from the firsthand perspective.
